Reading History

Literacy can be defined in many different ways. To me literacy means being able to process information that is written or verbally spoken to you. On a regular basis we apply literacy very often, when we read books, or if we hear directions then follow them or even writing about how we feel about something are all forms of literacy. For me the roots of literacy where planted when I was a toddler and my mother would read me books every day before I went to bed, I loved to imagine the pictures and hear the story in my head right before I slept for the night.

My family first influenced me to start reading I wanted to be able to read my favorite books just like my mom did. I remember when I learned to spell my first word I was the happiest little girl ever. My family was so proud of me it made me want to learn and achieve more which made me work especially hard so I could get the wonderful praise from them I was also proud of myself for learning at an early age. My first experiences with reading were with Doctor Sue’s book I loved the rhythms and the silly words. I started to read the beginner books at around age four. At that age my favorite fairytale was Barbie as Repunzel she was my all-time favorite. I liked those kinds of princesses who were locked in a room and needed to be saved by a prince. The book entertained me as it did all the other little girls.

When I was in elementary school I attended Loring Fleming Elementary http://www.gloucestertownshipschools.org/Schools/SchLoringFlemming/index.htm
My favorite book that I read there was Island Of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_the_Blue_Dolphins ) I loved that book it was so interesting to me it was one of the first books I read and actually loved that book inspired me to keep reading and open my imagination. My 3rd grade teacher helped me make a habit of reading by having a chart to read for 20 minutes every day that my mom had to sign. If we got our parents to sign and we recorded the most pages read we would get a prize. By the end of the year reading came naturally and became part of my everyday life.

I attended Charles W Lewis Middle School, http://www.gloucestertownshipschools.org/Schools/SchLewis/index.htm
S. E. Hinton from the outsiders I loved that book it kept me interested. Ellen Raskin who wrote the westing game the first mystery I ever read and loved. Stephaney Meyer who wrote my four all-time favorite books the twilight series are examples of some of my favorite authors and books. I never stuck to any type of of genre because I just like any type of books. Literacy is important because we need it and we use it on a daily basis. Literacy has helped me go forward in my life so much I would not be good in school if it wasn’t for me being literate.

In high school I hope to read more interesting books, like Anne of the Green Gables. I’m not entirely sure of specific books but I hope to read a mystery or two they keep me interested and my mind working. On a daily basis I read magazines and text online. More basic things like banners advertisers and street signs. Almost everything we see is read and processed without us really knowing. I also try making sure I read every chance I get.

At this moment in time I love to read if I'm interested in it but it’s hard for me to read if I don’t like a book. right now I'm reading  “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer this book sparks my interest every time I open it I can’t put it down I love the book so much I would hope to  the other books this author wrote. Literacy is like a tree because it starts off with roots to support a thick trunk then helps you branch out further in life.
